Footnotes

1

This is a masculine plural noun, therefore, it cannot be the group of friends that accompanied her on her wedding day, as is implied by some translations which read, “friends in attendance.” Neither can it be their daughters. Because it is a masculine noun we can assume it refers to his friends, even though it only says “friends” not “my friends.” This is not an identifiable group of friends, but his friends in general. The meaning of the word emphasizes “likeness or similarity” in some way. In other places in Scripture it has been translated as “those of like rank.” No one was of similar rank to Solomon, so it could not have been rank. It most likely means that men who search for a wife would all be attracted to the Shulammite’s grace and favor.
