Translation

They had long hair like that of a woman

Paraphrase

They had ferocity and strength,

and were

well equipped for battle.

In ancient times long, unbound hair was often associated with barbarous people, hence the image of ferocity and strength. Absalom was known for his long hair and was admired for it. It was not seen as being feminine, but rather a sign of being independent and strong. In contrast baldness was seen as a sign of weakness.
