Paraphrase

I know your situation, you are hemmed in and experiencing great pressure with seemingly no way out, and I know your condition of destitute poverty; but in reality, you abound in resources and are amply supplied.  I know the slander of those saying they are MY PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO PRAISE ME

but are not, rather they are

pupils in the school of GOD’S ADVERSARY.

Footnotes

1

“Distress” can mean “tribulation, affliction or distress.”  But the heart of the word has to do with being hemmed in and under pressure.

2: "Jews"

I take this to mean “God’s people” because Jesus is speaking and He does not care about blood lines as much as we do.

3: “synagogue of Satan”

The synagogue was used for several purposes; it was a meeting place, a community center (for the Jews of that community) and a school. The idea being expressed here is that they were followers of Satan, learning and practicing his ways. In this sense the idea of learning (i.e. a school) fits better than a meeting place. Satan can mean “accuser” or “adversary.” Here I think “adversary of God” fits best.
