Footnotes
1: "who I also hate"
The Nicolaitans (followers of a certain Nicolaus) were corrupters and seducers of the people, drawing them into sexual immorality and idol worship, promoting an “anything goes” attitude. This congregation had not totally abandoned their faith to follow the world, but they had let their love for Jesus (their “first love”) grow cold. While some aspects of the culture around them repulsed them, some aspects of it were also very attractive to them; they were “desirable,” as the name of the city indicates.
