also spices (which were the envy of ancient peoples), essential oils which provided soothing for the mind and vitality for the body, the full array of all kinds of foodstuffs, abundance of livestock, trained military animals and military equipment, slaves, and those things which enslave people’s souls),

In John’s day the things which enslaved the soul would have been primarily strong drink and prostitution. Today the list is longer and includes the additions of addictive drugs (both legal and illegal),  pornography, gambling, and others.
