Paraphrase
I saw that the woman had passed the normal limits and was controlled by her habit of taking the lives of the saints, and taking the lives of those willing to give their lives as witnesses of THE SAVIOR. I was extremely amazed, and began to ponder as I looked at her.
Footnotes
1
In Greek the same word is translated “witness” and “martyr.” Here I have chosen to weave both meanings together.
2: “I marveled with great wonder”
The Greek does not suggest anything negative, simply a sense of extreme awe. However, it can imply the movement away from amazement toward pondering questions like, “What is really going on? How did this come about? What does this mean?”
