on the earth,

of the BEAST and those who worshipped his image.
Paraphrase
So the first one departed and set in motion the consequences demanded by the evidence, directing them at the source of man’s livelihood, the ground that allows man to earn wealth, and their source of livelihood and wealth became the source of intense pain and suffering for mankind, specifically for those who had the self-imposed identifying pledge of allegiance to the FEROCIOUS CREATURE, and those who worshipped his image.

The use of “land” to represent the source of riches would make perfect sense to people of ancient times. Land was a huge part of the blessings and curses of the former covenant. Many in ancient times lived off the land, either growing crops or, as was more common in Israel, raising livestock. Some people in the city still had fields in the surrounding area. Others in the cities did not live directly off the land but they were still much closer to it than today’s city dwellers. Everyone back then understood that without land there was very little hope for gaining wealth, something which the founding Fathers of America also believed.
