Paraphrase

I was in close communion with the Holy Spirit on the day

set aside for THE SUPREME RULER, and a person of obvious strength made himself known to me in such a way that I knew he was supporting me. What he made known to me was an important announcement—something everyone should pay attention to.

Footnotes

1

The voice was a way to make yourself known, to reveal who you are. One’s voice was more than just a way to communicate, it was self-revelation. The voice draws from what is inside and reveals it for all to hear and know what is deep down inside—who a person really is.

2: “Behind me”

When someone speaks to us he is usually in front of us. Likewise, Jesus usually spoke to people’s faces, not their backs. The fact that this time is different could indicate that symbolism is involved. If so, I think the idea is that of “support.” “Behind” in the Old Testament also had the meaning of “protection,” as a rear guard served to protect the rear of the army. But it seems more plausible that “support” is intended here rather than “protection.” This fits the theme of encouragement for those in persecution.

3

A trumpet call was used most often in battle but also at various other times to get peoples’ attention and send a message. Whenever a trumpet call was heard it was something very important, it merited everyone’s attention, and should be obeyed, not ignored.
