Revelation1:9

Translation

I, JOHN,

your brother, and a

participant with you in affliction, in GOD’S sovereign rule, and in endurance, all of which we experience in JESUS, was

on the island of Patmos

because of the word of GOD

and my

testimony of JESUS.

Paraphrase

I, TO WHOM GOD IS GRACIOUS, your brother, and a participant with you in affliction, in the sovereign rule of THE CREATOR AND OWNER OF ALL THINGS, and in endurance,

all of which we experience in THE SAVIOR, was on the island

of Patmos because of the word of THE CREATOR AND OWNER OF ALL THINGS and my testimony of THE SAVIOR.

The meaning of Patmos is uncertain; therefore I don’t think the meaning of the name is necessary for understanding Revelation. However, it probably was a well-known fact that several islands in this area were used to house political prisoners. It was synonymous with confinement, and isolation. John’s presence on Patmos proved to the readers that he was going through persecution, just as they were.
