ANOTHER RULE: SPIRITUAL GIFTS SHOULD PRODUCE UNITY NOT DIVISION
This is the second rule governing all spiritual gifts; it can be summed up in one word, unity. If something causes great division in the body of Christ it is not a proper gift of the Holy Spirit, or it is not being properly employed.
A Counterfeit Has Created Division
If we give one spiritual gift a higher status than God gives it, we foment the desire to create a counterfeit gift in order to look more spiritual. That in turn creates division in the body as each one seeks self-aggrandizement instead of seeking to help, serve and encourage others. Instead of saying, “How can I help you?” the counterfeit says, “Look at me.” That appears to be what happened in Corinth.
