to the clean and to the unclean, to him who sacrifices, and to him who does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner, he who takes an oath [easily] as he who takes an oath with much fear.

Paraphrase

All mankind shares the same fate; one thing for sure happens to the righteous and to the wicked, to those that are good and to those that are bad, to those who are careful about their spiritual condition, and to those who don’t care, to

those who do everything God wants to them to do, and to those who don’t even try. The good guy and the bad dude are the same in one respect, they have the same fate; the one who does spiritual business with God with a flippant attitude is the same in one respect as the one who takes doing business with God very seriously, they both will face the same fate.

Footnotes

1: “one event”

It is obvious that he is talking about death, but he does not use any form of the word death until the end of the next verse, 9:3.

2

Hebrew is known for leaving things out that the reader must insert. Here the Hebrew text has left out the words “and the bad.”
