If a marriageable young woman who is a virgin and is engaged to be married to a man is in a place where other people can hear her if she screams, and another man finds her and has sexual relations with her,

The word used here, and in the verses to follow, has the basic meaning of “find” and things similar to it such as “discover, and meet (often unexpectedly)” but it can also carry ideas that involve being found to have possession of something or someone, such as “to attain, secure, or gain.” In the city it may simply mean “to meet” but in the countryside it seems to imply that he discovered her to be alone in a remote place and caught her.
