And after Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them; they were speaking in tongues and prophesying.
Paraphrase
Then, after Paul used the commonly recognized symbol of transferring something from him to them, the Holy Spirit honored the request made by that symbol and took control of them and as a result, they were speaking in foreign languages and uttering divinely given words that impacted the spiritual condition of others.
Two Types of Transfer
Through baptism, they transferred themselves to the authority and will of Jesus, and through the laying on of Paul’s hands, God used Paul to transfer to them something additional, that being the full control of Holy Spirit over their minds and bodies.
PROPHESYING
This account ends with them speaking in tongues and prophesying – the latter being the completion of the circle – what to do about it.
